Offal - Offal 2006Almost nothing is better than being scared.  In an era long since past, humans had to struggle for survival whether it was for sustenance, against inclement weather, or fighting other tribes.  Sure that hardship exist today in the Sudan, Somalia, or Detroit, but it has been diluted of its purity due to the capitalist engine that rewards the greedy for their lack of conscience.  Consequently, those who love to strap fear onto their shoulders line up at movie theatres, buy flicks from Something Weird Video, read horror books, or listen to Goregrind, for most of us, especially in the USA, live in relative ease thereby making trepidation a purchasable pleasure.  As an aficionado of terror I was instantly allured by Offal whose self-titled debut tantalized my once instinctually homicidal mind into bloodlust fervor I had accepted for being sedated.

The first time I heard Offal was over my sublime Bose Noise Canceling earphones.  The fuzz that emanated from the lower guts of Offal briefly caused me to think that my headset was fucked due to the indolent humming of the instruments.  The Offal guitars are crushing gravity low with a splashing straightforward riffing haze similar in power to having an oil tanker splatter your fat ass from bow to stern under its clamorous bulk.  Bass and drums back the music perfectly with lurching crawls, ghastly mashing, and timely fills that have an Autopsy worshipping vibe.  Vocally, gorgeous puke languidly flows in a wave of dominant turbulence that slathers the listener’s ears in bile.  Seriously, each time I have heard Offal, I have found myself coated afterward in sticky tequila smelling barf.

Musically I am inclined to tell you all that Offal reminds me of Autopsy, Abscess, Anatomia, and Mausoleum with a hint of Gut.  But Offal stands out as a result of their lurching Doom transitions woven into the fabric of Autopsy riffage.  This is a style used by Anatomia and Mausoleum, but from my perspective Offal is slightly more captivating due to their songs being shorter and compositionally simpler.  Adding to the filthy allure of their sound is a production possessing a reverberation that is dull but powerful; sort of like turning the volume up loud on a stereo whose batteries are dieing.

The best thing about Offal is that they are fun to hear and they embody a chilling aura that reeks of shock flick glory.  Fans whose love of fear borders on fanatical should order this slab of Goregrind up and play it as they abduct then kill capitalist cunts, for Offal truly is the sound of a primitive humanity caught in the chaos of modern technology. ENJOY!!!!
